The concept originally comes from professional sports — where coaches design specific plays for specific game situations. In the proprietary trading industry, it was popularized by Mike Bellafiore (co-founder of SMB Capital) in his landmark book The Playbook as the ultimate tool to bridge the gap between a struggling retail trader and a consistently profitable professional.
A Trading Playbook is far more than a generic trading plan. It is a highly detailed, living catalog of your absolute best setups — your Plays. For each one, it documents the exact DNA of the trade: the higher timeframe narrative, the micro-structural triggers (Order Flow absorption, Stacked Imbalances), the rigid entry, stop, and exit mechanics, and visual examples of perfect executions.
- Eliminates randomness — if the market doesn't match a play in your book, you stay flat. No guessing, no FOMO.
- Enables aggressive sizing — when an A+ play appears, you have the proven confidence to size up.
- Streamlines review — at end of session: "Did I perfectly execute a valid play?" replaces "Did I make money?"
- Adapts over time — a living document that evolves with the market.
"If it's not in your Playbook, it's not on your screen."
Use mine as templates, not as copy-paste. Your edge must live in your own words and convictions.
After reading each setup, write it back out in your own words. If you can't explain it, you don't own it yet.
My entry/exit rules are a foundation. Adapt them to your risk tolerance, your schedule, your execution style.
A playbook is a living document. Add screenshots, notes, edge refinements. Review it after every meaningful session.
Before going live with a setup, run it in simulation for at least 2 weeks. Let the pattern become automatic, not cognitive.
